How to Successfully Lose Half Your Readers (and Gain 10 Pounds)

Posted by TDot on May 22, 2011 in Randomness

Good evening folks! :D

With the first summer session here at NCCU Law getting underway tomorrow, today got spent tying up loose ends before the back-to-school grind resumes. And in the process I re-discovered some of the effects of final exam season: over the last 3 weeks of my 2L Spring semester, we lost about half of our regular readers as law:/dev/null has gone un-updated… and I managed to pack on another 10lbs around my waistline.1

So while all the cool kids make New Year’s Resolutions about getting in shape and other worthwhile endeavors, in honor of my procrastinating tendencies I’m making those resolutions 5 months late instead: effective today I’m improving my diet, exercising more, and finally posting an update to the blog ;)

My predecessor Preston Mitchum and I transitioned over the NCCU Law SBA this month

Here’s a quick rundown of where I’ve been the past few weeks:

  • I finally became a 3L
  • …then un-became a 3L, as my Scientific Evidence professor unexpectedly gave the entire class 3 days to turn in an extra assignment — and I proceeded to sequester myself in my apartment like a hermit until it was finished
  • Re-became a 3L again, for real this time :spin:
  • Took over as President of our Student Bar Association
  • Amped up my work schedule at I-Cubed to 40hrs a week… right before realizing I probably can’t continue at that pace when summer school starts ::headdesk::
  • Watched the Class of 2011 graduate
  • Watched the law school end up in a minor scandal after graduation
  • Tallied up the private $$$ the SBA raised last year — an all-time record in law school history — and how much the 2011-12 SBA has raised in the past few weeks2
  • Penned my 2nd guest column for the Beyond Hearsay blog (publication date TBD)
  • Spent $350 on books for summer school :surprised:
  • Spent hours reading ~150 pages for tomorrow’s first day of class
  • Finally got around to updating law:/dev/null, including tweaking our About page to reflect my now-3L status :D

That’s the rundown. Nothing particularly exciting… which makes me wonder how exactly time has flown by so fast :crack:

I’d be lying to you if I said I expected to resume regular blog updates, simply because my summer school schedule leans toward the crazy side this year (10 credit hours total) when it’s coupled with my internship. But my hope is I’ll work my way into a routine and can get back to posting somewhat regular content.

That’s it from me for tonight, I’m off to bed so I can get up for work + class tomorrow. Have a great night everybody! :)

  1. A repeat of the end of my 2L Fall semester, but this time without Thanksgiving as an excuse  []
  2. A +32% year-over-year increase, positioning us to beat last year’s record :spin: []

Catching up (again)

Posted by TDot on Apr 8, 2011 in Randomness

I’ve got a handful of entries to finish editing from the past 2 weeks, ranging from the mundane (registering for my 3L Fall classes) to the slightly embarrassing (running out of time mid-speech during our forum for SBA candidates) to the don’t-really-have-anything-I-can-say-in-response (getting held in contempt by a real judge during a mock trial).1

Hopefully all of those will be posted at some point in the coming day or two now that campaign season is officially over, my Trial Practice class is essentially over, and my Scientific Evidence class will be over once I finish this last paper. Just wanted to let y’all know both myself and law:/dev/null are still alive :)

  1. No, you didn’t misread that last one  []

In Case You Missed It (Round VI)

Posted by TDot on Feb 23, 2011 in In Case You Missed It

After spending most of the past week preparing for or competing in the TYLA NTC regional competition, I finally worked my way through the blog entry backlog — just in time for me to disappear again the rest of this week so I can prep for AAJ as well as study at some point for my Business Associations midterm

If you have a few minutes to spare, below are the posts from last week just in case you missed them — please enjoy during my pending absence :)

Enjoy, and have a great night y’all! :D

TDot’s Tips: How to Succeed at Life

Posted by TDot on Feb 15, 2011 in TDot's Tips

Yes, I realize the post title is pretentious — I had to get your attention somehow.1 :P

Last week I mentioned that I’d have a column going live over at Kaplan’s Beyond Hearsay blawg. It got posted today, and you can check it out at this URL.

Here’s a snippet from the opening:

Do you remember that person in undergrad who always declined going out to dinner because they had homework to do? Who always walked around with a venti nonfat organic quintuple shot caffè macchiato frapp-o-death because they needed the caffeine to balance out repeated all-nighters? The one who had a nervous breakdown when grades were released because the lone A- they got in Über-Advanced Multivariable Calculus IV hurt their otherwise flawless GPA?

Most of us had at least one classmate in that category, likely several (and if you don’t remember anyone like that, he or she might have been you).

But think about where those people are today. Do you think they’re successful? Do *they* think they’re successful? And more importantly, are they enjoying their lives, successful or otherwise? Odds are good that the answer to at least one of these questions is “no.”

Be forewarned:  Beyond Hearsay is an almost-emoticon-free zone. And they like proper grammar and syntax :surprised:

So I tried to make up for my lack of graphics and contractions and run-on sentences by coming up with at least moderately-compelling content ;)  I promise you there’s good stuff in the rest of that post, but you’ll have to head over to Beyond Hearsay to read it :)

Have a great night y’all! :D

Law School Roundup #250

Posted by TDot on Feb 13, 2011 in Law School Roundup

Be honest: how many of y’all thought you’d never see one of these from me again?

My TYLA trial team competition is this coming Friday-Sunday, so after this week hopefully I’ll be able to reclaim my life, catch up on class, and resume blogging with something vaguely resembling a degree of regularity :D

Unless we somehow make it to nationals, in which case I’d be MIA until April :surprised:

Fortunately for me (and all of us) the blawgosphere has been steadily percolating in my absence ;) Here’s some of what was going on during the week of February 6th through February 13th, 2011:

  • Taking a break: Shan decides she needs a break from classes [Like Falling Off a Blawg]
  • Enjoying life: JE focuses on making the present count [The JE Guide to Life]
  • Better than books: Ryan finds a more useful investment of his $$$ [3Life]
  • Worse than books: Law School Dreamer features a post on the law school tuition bubble [A Paralegal's Journey to Lawyerhood]
  • Sticking with books: Jansen concludes he’s not busy enough for e-ink [Dennis Jansen]
  • Litigation-less: Steve is disappointed at a last-minute settlement [Law School: What's the Big Deal?]
  • Consent-less?: Laura and some readers in an engaging debate on affirmative consent laws [Really? Law?]
  • Writing (for grades): Ivy Lea is spending her 3L year writing, writing, writing [Ivy Lea(gue)]
  • Writing (for fun): Jacklyn gets an offer to join her law school’s blog [JayeWalking]
  • Never Give Up: Jenny shares some wisdom from an elementary school during “Family Fun Day” [Surviving Law School as a Single Mom]
  • The media and the law: Sherpa is back, wondering if he’s naive or if the media just screws up every time they talk about the law [Fight the Hypo]
  • The law in the media: Mariel starts to second-guess her love of Jack McCoy [Fresh Thought Soup]
  • Perception vs. Perception: Competing views on lawyer biographies [Law is Cool]
  • Courtoons is back!: Even though I’m just now noticing this 2 weeks after the fact, and it’s not even a law student site, I wanted to make sure everyone knew Courtoons was back [Courtoons]

If you want to be included in the Roundup, basically you have to (i) be a law student, (ii) write new content during the week of the review, and (iii) Katie Luper and I have to know you exist ;)

You’ve already got #3 in that list covered if you’re in my blogroll to the right — and if you’re not, just send me an email (see the bottom of my About page for the address) or add law:/dev/null to your own blogroll so you show up in my logs.

For some info on how it gets done, read through Evan Schaeffer’s 2006 entry on how he did it; I use it for guidance alongside the obligatory dose of editorial discretion.

And make sure to check back over at KatieLuper.com for Roundup #251! :D

New material later today

Posted by TDot on Feb 6, 2011 in Randomness

Happy Super Bowl Sunday everybody :)

Haven’t written anything on the blog for a loooong time now — will have a new update some time today for certain. Instead of a bunch of old entries though it’ll all be rolled into one super-long entry

See you in a few hours!

In case you missed it (Round V)

Posted by TDot on Jan 6, 2011 in In Case You Missed It

The past week has been miserable from a “personal health” standpoint, which put me behind on blogging. Then the ickiness didn’t go away and I got put behind at the internship too — which put posting blog entries even further behind

But they’re finally up now, so if you get bored and want to read them they’re now posted just for you ;)

Enjoy, and have a great night y’all! :D

Law School Roundup #248

Posted by TDot on Jan 2, 2011 in Law School Roundup

Good evening y’all! :D

I think Katie‘s gotten super-busy with BarBri bar review, so this weekend’s Law School Roundup is actually a double dose covering the past two weeks :)

Here’s a non-exclusive handful of posts from law students around the web for the weeks of December 19-25 and December 26-January 1:

  • Help Wanted: lawschooldreamer wants your suggestions for blog topics in 2011 [A Paralegal's Journey to Lawyerhood]
  • Help Provided: Jess brings a guest blogger for those of you making weight loss Resolutions for the New Year [Crafting Happiness]
  • More Help Provided: Jeremy also has a guest blogger on finding a job in a bad economy [Jeremy C. Wilson]
  • She’s Baaaaack: Jacklyn is back again [JayeWalking]
  • She’s Baaaaack: the Remix: Mariel’s back too… twice this time [Fresh Thought Soup]
  • Exams in Review: Ivy Lea takes a look back on 3L Fall finals [Ivy Lea(gue)]
  • Semester in Review: Jansen highlights the highlights of his 3L Fall semester [Dennis Jansen]
  • Year in Review: C explains why 2010 was the best year ever [Legal Ease]
  • Year in Review #2: KK reflects on 2010 and concludes it’s similarly awesome [oh hay, it's kk]

If you want to be included in the Roundup, basically you have to (i) be a law student, (ii) write new content during the week of the review, and (iii) Katie and I have to know you exist ;)

You’ve already got #3 in that list covered if you’re in my blogroll to the right — and if you’re not, just send me an email (see the bottom of my About page for the address) or add law:/dev/null to your own blogroll so you show up in my logs.

Law School Roundup #247

Posted by TDot on Dec 19, 2010 in Law School Roundup

Good evening y’all! :)

I mentioned back on Tuesday that the 6-years-old Law School Roundup had found a new home over at KatieLuper.com as its founder Evan Schaeffer focused on his growing legal practice.  Katie was looking for a partner to split the Roundup similar to the arrangement Evan and ImNobody worked out over the past couple years — so I jumped at the opportunity :D

Each week, one of us will take a browse through the blawgosphere and pick out a handful of entries to post here. For some info on how it gets done, read through Evan’s 2006 entry on how he did it; I’ll be using that entry as guidance myself.

So without further bloviating on my part, here’s the Law School Roundup for the week of December 12-18:

If you want to be included in the Roundup, basically you have to (i) be a law student, (ii) write new content during the week of the review, and (iii) Katie and I have to know you exist ;)

You’ve already got #3 in that list covered if you’re in my blogroll to the right — and if you’re not, just send me an email (see the bottom of my About page for the address) or add law:/dev/null to your own blogroll so you show up in my logs.

And make sure to check back over at KatieLuper.com next week for Roundup #248! :D
