It depends on where you are, typically the closer you are to the coast the more expensive it gets. LA and the San Francisco Bay Area are the most expensive. When I was growing up we actually moved to the Pacific Northwest because it just got too expensive. I didn't really factor that in when I decided to move back, and I'd say that my COL from my undergrad years in the Midwest probably doubled...and I'm not on the water :( Rent, insurance, gas, groceries...everything costs more. There are manageable places and where I live isn't too bad, but I wish that I could have California living on a Midwest budget :) Hope your first year is going well so far!
